Nepal's Trekking Seasons at a Glance

Nepal's climate is governed by the monsoon cycle. The country has four distinct seasons, each offering a completely different trekking experience. Choosing the right time can make the difference between a trek with crystal-clear Himalayan views every day and one spent walking through fog and rain.

Autumn (October - November): The Best Season

Autumn is widely considered the best time to trek in Nepal, and for good reason. The monsoon ends in late September, leaving the air washed clean and the skies brilliantly clear. Visibility is at its peak, and you will see mountain views that look almost unreal in their clarity.

Weather Conditions

  • Temperature: Moderate at lower elevations (15-25°C during the day below 3,000m). Cold at higher elevations (-5 to 10°C during the day above 4,000m). Nights are cold everywhere above 3,000m.
  • Rainfall: Minimal. The occasional brief afternoon shower is possible in early October, but by mid-October the skies are reliably clear.
  • Visibility: Excellent. This is the prime season for photography and mountain views.

Best Treks for Autumn

Every major trek is at its best in autumn. The Everest Base Camp trek, Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp, Langtang Valley, Manaslu Circuit, and Upper Mustang are all excellent choices.

Drawbacks

Autumn is peak season, which means crowded trails and busy teahouses. On the EBC route, teahouses at popular stops like Namche, Tengboche, and Gorak Shep can fill up. Booking with an agency or arriving early in the day helps. Flight cancellations to Lukla are less common than in spring but still possible.

Spring (March - May): The Second-Best Season

Spring is the second most popular season and offers warmer temperatures than autumn, making it more comfortable at high altitudes. The rhododendrons bloom between 2,500m and 4,000m from mid-March through April, turning the hillsides into a spectacular display of red, pink, and white.

Weather Conditions

  • Temperature: Warmer than autumn, especially at altitude. Daytime temperatures are pleasant even above 4,000m. Nights are still cold.
  • Rainfall: Generally dry in March and early April. Pre-monsoon moisture builds from late April, causing afternoon clouds and occasional rain. May is hazy and warm at lower elevations.
  • Visibility: Good in March and early April. Afternoon clouds increase from mid-April, but mornings are usually clear.

Best Treks for Spring

The Annapurna region is particularly beautiful in spring because of the rhododendron forests. The Ghorepani-Poon Hill trek is a classic spring choice. EBC and Langtang are also excellent. Spring is the main Everest climbing season, so if you want to see base camp at its busiest, trek in April-May.

Drawbacks

Visibility deteriorates from late April. Afternoon clouds can block mountain views, though mornings are usually clear. The lower sections of trails can be warm and humid. May is the hottest month before the monsoon — treks below 3,000m are uncomfortable.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January

Cold and clear. Snow on trails above 3,500m. Lower-altitude treks like Poon Hill and the Kathmandu Valley rim are doable. Fewer trekkers. Teahouses above 4,000m may be closed. Not recommended for EBC or high-altitude treks unless you are experienced and equipped for winter conditions.

February

Still cold but days are getting longer. Late February is the start of the transition to spring. Lower-altitude treks are pleasant. Snow begins to melt. A good month for Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, and Langtang (lower section).

March

Spring arrives. Temperatures rise, skies are clear, and the rhododendrons begin to bloom at lower elevations. An excellent month for trekking almost anywhere in Nepal. Trails are less crowded than October-November.

April

Peak spring. Rhododendrons are in full bloom between 2,500-4,000m. Good weather with increasing afternoon clouds. The Everest climbing season begins and base camp comes alive. One of the best months for EBC, Annapurna Circuit, and Manaslu Circuit.

May

Hot and increasingly hazy at lower elevations. Still workable for high-altitude treks (EBC, Annapurna Circuit) where the altitude keeps temperatures comfortable. Late May marks the start of the monsoon in some years. Not ideal for treks below 3,000m.

June - August

Monsoon season. Heavy rainfall, leeches on trails below 3,000m, obscured mountain views, and slippery paths. Most trekkers avoid Nepal during monsoon. However, rain-shadow areas like Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpo remain relatively dry and are actually best trekked during monsoon (permit required). The Tsum Valley is another option.

September

The monsoon weakens. Late September can offer good trekking, especially in the second half of the month. The landscape is lush and green. A budget-friendly time as it is not yet peak season. Be prepared for occasional rain in early September.

October

The single best month to trek in Nepal. Clear skies, excellent visibility, moderate temperatures, dry trails. Every major trek route is in prime condition. The busiest month on popular routes.

November

Still excellent. Slightly colder than October but skies remain clear. Crowds thin out after the Diwali/Tihar holiday period. An ideal month if you want the quality of autumn without the peak-October crowds.

December

Cold and clear. Short days. Snow above 4,000m. Lower-altitude treks are still enjoyable — Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, and the Annapurna foothills are fine. High-altitude routes require winter gear and experience. Teahouses above 4,000m start to close for winter.

Festivals to Consider

Nepal's major festivals fall during prime trekking season and can affect logistics:

  • Dashain (October): Nepal's biggest festival. Domestic flights are heavily booked, and many Nepalis travel home. Book flights and accommodation well in advance if trekking during Dashain.
  • Tihar (October-November): The festival of lights. Kathmandu is beautifully decorated. Less impact on trekking logistics than Dashain.
  • Holi (March): The festival of colors. Primarily celebrated in Kathmandu and the Terai. Minimal impact on trekking.

The Bottom Line

If you can only go once, go in October or November. If you want fewer crowds and blooming rhododendrons, go in March or April. If you want solitude and are prepared for cold, December through February can be magical on lower-altitude routes. And if Upper Mustang is on your list, the monsoon season is actually your best bet.
